Weblaunch - CCS in the Skagerrak/Kattegat-region

av Camilla Svendsen Skriung 05.Mar.2010 - 15:50

Today the website www.ccs-skagerrakkattegat.eu is launched. This is the website of the Interreg-project IV A "CCS in the Skagerrak/Kattegat-region" The Interreg IVA project is a cross country -and research arena cooperation. The goal is to see how an infrastructure for CCS can be developed in the best possible way, in the Skagerrak/Kattegat region, to capture and store the large amount of 10 mill tonn CO2. Check the website for continious updates on the research in the project and region.

The Scandinavian countries intend to reduce their CO2 emissions considerably. Within a 100 km radius from a point in the middle of Skagerrak there are around 12 million tons of CO2 from large point sources, respectively 2.2, 4-6 and 4,4 mill tons from the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish energy and industry sectors. The emissions are expected to rise to 17-18 mill. tons in 10 years time, i.e. a trend which contradicts the political will to reduce CO2 emissions and meet international climate targets.

Together with regional industry, Tel-Tek recently completed a pre-study with emphasis on CO2 emissions. Before the companies can start to budget the costs for installations to capture CO2, there is an urgent need for technical and economical information about the transportation and storage infrastructure. The proposed project aims within the region:

    * To establish a basis for the development of CCS infrastructure
    * To show the role CCS in the development of power generation and industry with respect to environment, competitiveness and security of supply
    * To increase knowledge on CO2 handling and help develop a joint understanding of challenges
    * To establish an industrial/political Scandinavian forum to work out a strategy to help reduce the CO2 emissions according to their national targets

The project idea is developed together with regional industry, central and regional public authorities and the R&D-centres Tel-Tek in Porsgrunn/Norway (infrastructure of CCS), The University of Oslo/Norway (geology), Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University in Gothenburg/Sweden. The latter two will  have special focus on establishing an integrated CCS infrastructure and to assess the regulatory framework of EU in the three countries involved.

ZERO is part of this project as members of the working group on communication which will convey the results from the research.  The goal is to clarify economical and technological elements for use/connection to CCS infrastructure, to establish good tools for communication and knowledge spreading.

Facts:

Removing CO2 from a point source and depositing it in deep geological formations is called carbon capture and storage. You will also find terms like CO2 storage, CO2 handling, or CO2 sequestration used for approximately the same thing. CCS is a widely used acronym for the capture, transport and storage process as a whole.
