A number of planned CCS projects form part of the North East CCS Cluster, which would make use of a shared transport infrastructure being developed for the Yorkshire and Humber region (see transport network below).

In August 2010, Progressive Energy and Rio Tinto Alcan’s plans for CCS projects in the north east of the UK were awarded grants from the UK government’s funding towards the Tees Valley Industrial Programme (TVIP), which aims to support low-carbon technologies in the region.

Progressive Energy received ₤240,000 towards its planned pre-combustion capture facility at its new Eston Grange 850MW IGCC power plant, and Rio Tinto Alcan was awarded ₤430,000 to develop retrofit capture technology for its existing Lynemouth Power Station. Coastal Energy will operate Eston Grange, which will capture around 85%, or 5 million tonnes per annum, of its CO2 emissions. The captured gas will be transported for permanent storage in North Sea aquifers or used for EOR projects.

At its existing Lynemouth power station, Rio Tinto Alcan aims to demonstrate retrofitted capture technology at one of the three generating units. Captured CO2, at a planned rate of 2.5Mtpa, would be transported via undersea pipeline and stored in an offshore aquifer.

UK Oxy CCS Demo (formerly Drax)

Alstom is developing plans to build a new 426MW oxy-fired CCS demo plant in Drax, North Yorkshire. In January 2012, industrial gas supplier BOC joined Alstom as co-developer on the project. If realised it will capture 2Mtpa of CO2 using Alstom's oxyfuel combustion technology. The captured CO2 would be transported via the proposed NE CCS Transport Network (see below) to an offshore storage site in the Southern North Sea, or for use in EOR operations. Feasibility studies started in March 2010. The project is expected to be operational in 2016.

Other sites within NE CCS Cluster

The Humber region cluster of CCS projects also includes the Killingholme, Immingham and Ferrybridge CCS projects, and the power plants of Eggborough, and Keadby would also be potential CO2 capture sites, as well as Scunthorpe steel works.

North East CCS Transport Network

CO2Sense, a company of development agency Yorkshire Forward, is developing plans for an open, shared CO2 transport and storage network within the Yorkshire and Humber region. This would provide the transport and storage solution for regional projects such as Eston Grange and Lynemouth. See the project page for more details.

In November 2011, National Grid unveiled its preferred route for the pipeline that will carry CO2 from the Don Valley Power Project in West Yorkshire to suitable potential storage sites in the North Sea. View the route here.

Financing

In May 2011, Progressive Energy's pre-combustion project applied for funding from the EU's NER300 scheme – a €4.5 billion fund to support CCS and renewable projects across the European Union. It was one of seven CCS proposals from the UK, which also included Alstom consortium's Drax CCS demo project. A final award decision is expected in the second half of 2012. Read ZERO news article.

Both projects are also in line to receive funding from the UK government’s second phase CCS competition, which will award more than ₤2 billion to three new CCS schemes. Eston Grange and Lynemouth are bidding for ₤1 billion each.

A financial investment decision on both projects is due by 2011, and both ventures are currently seeking additional investors.
