Facts:
A clean energy innovation park on the Jiangsu coastland of China is to feature a 1200MW IGCC power plant with plans to incorporate carbon capture and storage. The facility, which would also co-produce syngas and chemicals, will be built alongside a 1300MW ultra-supercritical pulverised coal power plant.
Up to 1 million tonnes per annum of CO2 would be captured from the flue gases of both facilities, and would then be transported by 100km pipeline to Binhai in the same province for injection into onshore deep saline formations. It could also be piped 200km to the North Jiangsu oilfield for use in EOR projects.
In 2009, China’s State Council approved a development plan for the Jiangsu coastline, which includes construction of the Clean Energy Innovation Industrial Park to promote the development of industrial-scale, low-carbon facilities. This project is considered a key feature of the park. Its development also marks R&D collaboration between China and the US.

Timing
A pre-feasibility study has been completed and the feasibility study is expected to be completed by June 2011. The plant will be operational by 2015, subject to government approvals.
