The CO2CRC/HRL Mulgrave Capture Project’s key aim is to look at ways of reducing the risk and cost of pre-combustion CO2 capture within power plants using new coal burning technologies, such as IGCC.
Trials will evaluate three different technologies – solvent, membrane and adsorbent – for capturing CO2 from the next generation of high-efficiency power stations. To test the methods, three CO2 capture rigs have been commissioned at HRL Technology’s gasifer research facility at Mulgrave in Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne is developing solvent and membrane technologies and Monash University is engaged in adsorption research and development.
Financing
The A$4.1 million project is a joint collaboration between industry, research partners and the Victorian Government, which is providing just over A$2 million coming its Energy Technology Innovation Strategy (ETIS) Brown Coal R&D Program. Other resources come from the federal government’s CRC Program, other federal and state government programmes, and industry and research partners.
Timing
The evaluation trials are currently under way. Once the most cost-effective technologies have been identified, these will be subjected to further trials, such as different or additional steps to maximise CO2 capture.
