The joint venture CO2 Capture Project has - as part of its third phase of work - started an oxy-combustion capture trial on a pilot fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCC), based at one of Petrobras’ research complexes in São Mateus, Parana state, Brazil.

Testing began in early 2011 and aimed to explore the viability of retrofitting carbon capture, using oxy-combustion, to an FCC unit. The project will test start-up and shut-down procedures as well as different operating conditions. Results will feed into the development of technology capable of capturing up to 95% of emissions from refineries using similar units.

The CO2 Capture Project selected oxy-combustion as one of the most viable capture technologies to take forward for pilot stage. However, a number of issues still remain, such as equipment corrosion and health and safety, which the project will also consider.

Finance

The CO2 Capture project is a $50 million long-term venture, which is 70% funded by the partner companies with further financial support from respective governments.

Timing

The pilot was expected to begin in March 2011 and run until May 2011. Results are awaited.

CO2 Capture Project

The CO2 Capture Project, set up in 2000, is a partnership of seven major energy companies working together to develop technologies needed for commercial scale use of CCS. It has carried out more than 150 projects and has been working closely with governments, including the US Department of Energy, the European Commission and more than 60 academic bodies and global research institutes. Its third phase of work involves the development and testing of next generation CCS technologies. The partners are BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Petrobras, Shell, Suncor and EPRI.
