Kick-off meeting for the RISCS project

Kick-off meeting for the RISCS project

av Marius Gjerset 01.Feb.2010 - 00:00

ZERO are participating in the new project “Research into Impacts and Safety in CO2 Storage” (RISCS), with kick-off meeting 28.-29. January in Nottingham (UK). RISCS is a 4 year research project funded by EU FP7, with 23 partners. ZERO is contributing in our first EU-project, with external communication strategy work. ZERO are in the advisory board for the project together with CO2CRC from Australia, ZERT and Stanford University (US), University of Regina (Canada) and IEA-GHG.

Samuela Vercelli, University of Rome

The objective of the RISCS project is to provide research on environmental impacts to underpin frameworks for the safe management of CO2 storage sites. RISCS will improve knowledge important for both storage site operators and regulators for impacts of leaks of CO2 on near surface ecosystems – both in terrestrial and marine environments. In the project it will be conducted field laboratory experiments, measurements at natural leakage sites and numerical simulations, for both marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

The project will develop a Guide for Impacts Appraisal, which will provide a clear summary of the key risk issues that may need to be adressed when developing, operating and closing a storage site. ZERO will mainly participate in the project contributing to communication strategy for good communication of the safety of CO2 storage, in addition to be a part of the advisory board for the project together with CO2CRC from Australia, ZERT and Stanford University (US), University of Regina (Canada) and IEA-GHG.

Facts:

Removing CO2 from a point source and depositing it in deep geological formations is called carbon capture and storage. You will also find terms like CO2 storage, CO2 handling, or CO2 sequestration used for approximately the same thing. CCS is a widely used acronym for the capture, transport and storage process as a whole.
